International Youth Day | 12 August

Did you know that half of the people on our planet are 30 or younger? And this is expected to reach 57% by the end of 2030!

Today, 12 August, is International Youth Day. We’d like to extend our congratulations to you and share some interesting facts about the history of this day:

-> The idea for International Youth Day was first suggested in 1991 by a group of young people who had gathered in Vienna, Austria, for the first session of the World Youth Forum of the United Nations System.

-> The United Nations has set aside International Youth Day to shine a light on a range of cultural and legal issues affecting young people. The first IYD was observed on 12 August 2000.

-> In December 2009, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution 64/134, which proclaimed the year commencing 12 August 2010 as the International Year of Youth. The resolution called upon governments, civil society, individuals and communities worldwide to support activities at local and international levels to mark the event.

-> Security Council Resolution 2250 (9 December 2015) on Youth, Peace and Security is a big step forward. It recognises the urgent need to engage young peacebuilders in promoting peace and countering extremism. It also makes it clear that young people are important partners in global efforts.

-> Every year, International Youth Day has a different theme, focusing on different ways to empower and support young people. This year’s theme is “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development”.

-> We at Smokinya Foundation are delighted to be involved with the European youth community and would love to meet you on our projects!
