It’s already week 70, let’s talk about this amazing week!
The highlights we will discover this week were the launch of the new ESC volunteering project named Bright lands, helping hands, the organisation of our Smokinya Halloween event, chickens and the preparations, some more wood and the garden.
So Bright Lands is the newest ESC long-term volunteering project launched by Smokinya. It took a lot of time and work of our coordinators Victoria and Léo. They managed to create the info pack, find partners, … and right now they are in the process of finding the volunteers for the project via interviews. If you want to find out more I would definitely suggest to go check out the project on our website https://smokinya.com/2026/10/new-volunteering-project-in-bulgaria-bright-lands-in-mrachenik/
For the helping hands this week the mayor of Mrachenik asked us to help her with the preparations for the presidential elections that are taking place on the 25th of October. The place where they will organise the actual voting for the people in Mrachenik had to be cleaned and that is exactly what we did.

This week we also started organising a Halloween event, the main focus group are children but of course everyone is welcome. We will have some activities prepared like face painting, pumpkin carving, making your own pom poms, … and we will also show the movie Wallace and Gromit.

The next topic is a small update on the wood shelf that we built. Because we built it, then we had to move it to the place it was supposed to go and after that we had to still make the roof but of course a woodshelf also needs wood and that is what we did this week. It took more than a few wheelbarrows to fill it up all the way. There should be at least 200 Kg of wood stored inside it, waiting and ready to be burned to keep the church house cozy and warm.

One of the final highlights we had this week was also doing one of the last tasks of the season in the garden. We will still use the area with the green house but outside of that it is becoming a bit too cold to use that soil. So we took the opportunity to revitelize the soil by fertilizing it with our compost. It was hard labour but it had to be done, this way the soil will be fully ready to use again in the spring.

And one of the biggest highlights we had this week was finally getting the chickens! Before the big day we still had to make sure our chicken coop was chicken worthy, we had to patch up holes and make it a safe place for our chickens. To get them we first went to the market in Banya on friday but sadly they did not have any chickens there but thanks to our detective work and Léo his amazing Bulgarian skills we were able to figure out that on saturday there was a market in Kaloyanovo that 100% guaranteed had chickens to sell. So we went the following day to that market and what do you know we found our chickens we were looking for. We bought 4 hens and we even got 1 rooster for free, after that we also bought the necessary equipment to provide them with water and food. We also bought a 10 Kg bag of great food from the person that helped us find the chickens when we were in Banya. Before the big day we still had to make sure our chicken coop was chicken worthy, we had to patch up holes and make it a safe place for our chickens.
