Since February 2025, Smokinya volunteers are living in a remote village working to rebuild a school and learn more about and connect with the rural life and people. The project, called Rural Future, is co-funded by the EU through the ESC programme.

During the Rural Future Project, we are going to cover the weekly progress through the so-called “Weekly Recaps”. Here we will give a short overview of what is going on in this little village called Mrachenik and will report on our experiences.
Hello all ! Here is Léo to tell you the story of our last week in Mrachenik !
This last week was mainly focused on taking care of the garden of the volunteer’s house. Pulling grass, turning soil, pulling weed and repeat…
As you can see on the first photo Victoria uncovered this beautiful rock path leading to the back of the garden. We are now waiting for the rain to do the last wash of the rocks.
Andrey and me started to turn the soil and remove all the weeds from the upper part of the garden for the next sowing season. It asked us some patience to spot and remove all the weeds but the results is worth it.
We also cleaned this tile path and the area behind that lead to our wood storage. No more tripping on grass, prickers or roots when picking up wood at night.
I finished crafting the soundproofing panels that are now ready to install. It was my first DIY of this kind, it was very stimulating and I am very satisfied of the result ! If you do something similar I recommend to use an electric stapler, my hands still remember the stapler I used to hang the fabric to the frames.
