offLINE – from volunteer towards employed, long-term volunteering project in Bulgaria (EVS / European Solidarity Corps)

Greetings from Latvia. My name is Kristina, I am 27 years old and my arrival in Bulgaria on April Fools’ Day was not a joke. This marked a beginning of my one year long EVS adventure in Smokinya Foundation and I am looking forward to new experiences.
In 2015 I’ve got my Journalism degree in Russia, came back to Latvia and started working in a news agency. It was not a job of my dreams and eventually led to a burnout. At this point I started to consider an opportunity to go abroad again which ended up being a volunteer in Bulgaria.
I find comfort and joy in nature, books, films and photography. You will probably notice me behind the camera during Smokinya events as it is one of the skills I plan to improve while being a part of the team. I believe the storytelling is such a powerful tool which, used wisely, can make a change in people’s minds, raise awareness about various issues and comfort those who need to escape their reality. We can inspire, encourage and give voice to those who are in need. But we only can do it together. And I am here to become a part of something bigger than myself.
Fun fact: if you want me to get distracted bring the dog. I have no resistance to cuddle an animal in general, but dogs have a special place in my heart.
