Chickens
Responsibility over a living being; that is what comes with buying chickens. It is something that is often forgotten when people buy animals; this was the first full week of having that responsibility. This week Jan took that responsibility on him; everything was new, and sometimes there were still hurdles that had to be taken. The chickens still need to learn a lot, and in this first week the fundamentals were laid for that. For example, they did not figure out how to drink water from the gravity chicken waterer; Jan had to teach them how to do it. Something else was when they had to sleep; they did not go into the chicken coop to the roosting area; they stayed outside. So this also had to be taught to the chickens; this is still an ongoing process, but there was one day when they did manage to do it all by themselves.
We will keep you updated on how our chickens are doing in the future.
Winter is coming …
Last week we shifted into second gear when it came to ‘winterfying’ everything we could so we could face the coming winter and emerge in the spring unscathed. In the school we put nylon protection onto the windows of the ‘cozy room’ where we are storing a lot of furniture and smaller items, and we also put layers of protection around critical water infrastructure (water valve in the school and outdoor spout in the volunteer’s house).

Besides the urgent tasks, we also did smaller ‘repair and maintain’ tasks, like fixing the roof in the back of the garden by making a custom new support beam.
Helping Hands
For helping hands this week, we took the initiative to make the road between Mrachenik and Domlyan safer by cutting the branches and weeds from the side of the road. We did this so drivers can have a way better view in the corners. The main problem drivers have on these roads is animals. Since hitting them would most likely be fatal for the animal(s), and the driver can have a serious risk of injury depending on how big the animal would be. This is the reason we wanted to give drivers a better view in the corners; it is to keep them and the animals safer.
Climbing mountains
Last Sunday one of our volunteers, Jan, climbed a mountain. Vrah Vezhen to be specific, 2198M tall. A total elevation during the hike of about 1100M and the distance was around 11.5KM. It was an amazing hike and an amazing experience! For sure the people that accompanied Jan during this hike, a local Bulgarian couple. The nicest people you could ever imagine, they provided transport and guided Jan to the top. After the amazing day they even cooked a meal for him as well with traditional Bulgarian food like кебапче and кюфте. Afterwards he even got some homemade лютеница! A truly amazing experience with truly amazing people.
