What is NICE Japan. Erabu 1?

A unique workcamp experience on Okinoerabu Island, Kagoshima, Japan! Volunteers will work on local flower farms, support sustainable agriculture and immerse themselves in island life.

Dates:  

  • Erabu 1 (A): Feb. 23 – Mar. 16, 2025
  • Erabu 1 (B): Feb. 23 – Mar. 5, 2025
  • Erabu 1 (C): Mar. 6 – 16, 2025

Important Details

1) Work Description:

  • Work on flower farms, mainly harvesting, selecting, and wrapping flowers.
  • Support local farmers struggling to find workers due to the island’s remote location.
  • Help sustain the agricultural industry, an essential part of the local economy.
  • Work schedule: 6 days per week, typically 08:00 – 18:00 (sometimes longer), with a lunch break from 12:00 – 13:30.

2) Accommodation:

Volunteers will stay in a local rented house with shared sleeping rooms, a bath, a kitchen and a toilet.
Volunteers prepare their own meals, except for lunch on workdays, which is provided by the farms.

3) Participation Fee:

9,000 JPY (approx. 54 EUR as of Nov. 2024).
This fee covers project preparation and coordination, including transport for camp leaders.
Meals and accommodation are provided for free by the local host.

4) Requirements:

Good Japanese skills (enough for daily conversations and work instructions).
Respect for local culture and farm life.
High motivation and patience for repetitive farm work.
Physical strength is not required, but a positive attitude is essential.

5) Language:

Japanese only. Info sheets will be provided in Japanese.

6) Other Details:

Volunteers can enjoy excursions on the island, including visits to limestone caves and beach activities.
Possible wildlife encounters: Sea turtles and, if lucky, whales!
The island has a strong community spirit and a unique culture influenced by the Ryukyu Kingdom.

7) Travel Information:

The nearest international airport is Naha (Okinawa).
Ferry schedule:

  • From Naha to Wadomari: 07:00 – 14:10
  • From Wadomari to Naha: 12:00 – 19:00
