The New European Bauhaus (NEB) Facility, under its Research & Innovation (R&I) component, is set to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time. With a focus on integrating the green transformation with social inclusion and local democracy, the NEB Facility’s actions are organized around three key areas: rebuilding trust in democracy, advancing circular and regenerative approaches in the built environment, and fostering innovative business models for sustainable urban transformation.

1. Connecting Green Transformation with Social Inclusion and Local Democracy

The first focus area targets the critical task of connecting environmental efforts with social inclusion and democratic engagement. As Europe pushes forward with its green agenda, the importance of fostering trust between citizens and democratic institutions cannot be overstated. This focus area emphasizes the need for participatory governance models that not only balance public and private interests but also ensure that vulnerable groups are included in the process.

Research in this area will explore solutions to rebuild trust and a sense of belonging among citizens, such as user-centric digital platforms and new organizational models at the neighborhood level. The role of emotions in the green transition and the potential of virtual worlds to create social capital will also be examined. By focusing on these aspects, the NEB Facility aims to create a more inclusive and trust-based approach to the green transformation.

2. Circular and Regenerative Approaches for the Built Environment

The second focus area focuses on developing a European ecosystem for circular and regenerative practices within the built environment. With the construction sector being a significant contributor to carbon emissions, the need for sustainable, circular, and climate-resilient practices is critical.

This area will research innovative designs, architecture, and bio-based materials that can transform the construction value chain. Key topics include enhancing the adaptability and recyclability of construction materials, developing modular and circular building designs, and exploring the potential of AI to make regenerative construction more affordable. The collaboration among various stakeholders, including architects, engineers, and artists, will be crucial in optimizing these integrated regenerative designs.

3. Innovative Funding and Business Models for Neighborhood Transformation

The third focus area recognizes that the built environment has been slow to adopt sustainable practices due to entrenched norms and conservative mindsets. To drive change, there must be demand for sustainable projects and incentives to support them. This focus area seeks to develop new business models and innovative funding mechanisms to attract capital and drive positive change in neighborhoods.

Research will focus on understanding market incentives, risks, and barriers to adopting sustainable building practices. It will also explore how waste materials can be transformed into high-quality secondary construction materials and the role of policy frameworks in supporting regenerative design practices. Additionally, the economic and social value of aesthetically pleasing, inclusive, and sustainable environments will be assessed.

The NEB Facility’s R&I component represents a bold step toward integrating environmental sustainability with social inclusion and democratic engagement. By focusing on these three key areas, the NEB Facility aims to not only advance the green transition but also ensure that it is equitable, inclusive, and supported by the citizens it seeks to benefit. As research in these areas progresses, the potential for transformative change in European neighborhoods and communities will become increasingly clear.
