Sofia is almost ours! – Volunteering chronicles
Do you remember us? We are Carmen and Ilze, the long-term volunteers in Smokinya foundation, we arrived here almost two months ago, full of enthusiasm and with a lot of desire to learn new things, we are still in Sofia, we haven’t ran away the country so please, continue reading our story!
First of all, in the office we have learnt a lot of administrative things about how to manage certain tasks for a foundation, we did useful responsibilities and activities, for example, learning a lot about working in social media, promoting events, contacting with Smokinya’s partners, learning how to use tools that can make work better.
We also have had contact with some local social collectives. After that, we have discovered that we would like to learn more new things and open our mind so right now we are looking for new activities, opportunities, workshops, training, lessons.
In addition, we have visited some awesome places in Bulgaria, for example: Pancharevo Lake, Veliko Tarnovo, the village of Lakatnik and Blagoevgrad. We are also discovering amazing places in Sofia, there are nice areas away from tourists and full of charm.
But it is not enough for us, we would like to discover the whole country so our next plan is to visit even more fantastic places in Bulgaria like Plovdiv, Varna and Pleven. Then, we will cross the border to discover other countries nearby.
Finally, we have made a huge social network, we have met volunteers from a lot of different countries, and we also have made new friends who are students, foreigner workers and local people. It has been hard and still it is hard to create a very close group of friends because we arrived in this country very recently, but we are sure that we will create our own family here.
In conclusion, at first it was a hard situation because of the huge change in our lives, it is still hard, but step by step we are creating our life here to feel comfortable in this country. We are happy for the opportunity to be here and we would like to continue with this adventure through the months. No one knows what will happen in the upcoming months, but we hope that everything goes even better than this past time.
Thanks a lot Smokinya Foundation for giving us this opportunity!
Carmen and Ilze.
