Communication: Agent of Change – Training course
13 – 21 Aug 2019, Czech Republic
12 – 20 Oct 2019, Czech Republic

In August this summer I had the opportunity to participate in the project “Communication: Agent of Change” funded by Erasmus.
Firstly, I would like to express my gratitude towards everyone involved in organizing and facilitating the workshop. It would not have been this enjoyable experience without your commitment.

Personally, I had no experience with or knowledge about non-violent communication prior to this training. I found the lessons structured in a very understandable and simple manner that helped me to easily grasp the concepts of NVC and apply them in the exercises we had.

Marshall Rosenberg’s idea of a person’s iceberg showed me a new, different perspective of the human consciousness and self-expression. This new way of perceiving the reality around me helped me most importantly to learn to understand myself better and empathize with myself and the people around me.

However, I believe the biggest learning I have from this training is that empathy is a choice. I used to be very worried about being nice, friendly and responsive to everyone around me. What I have learned is that this is physically impossible and it will most likely lead to me being unhappy. It is okay to not empathize with people I barely care about. Thanks to the training, I know how to express this in a way that is not harmful to anyone.

It has also helped me to articulate my feelings and needs in a more detailed and logical manner which I genuinely enjoy doing and try to check in with myself everyday on my feelings/needs status. I believe being non-violent towards the outer world requires us to first be in peace and non-violent within our inner self.

I was pleasantly surprised when I came back, to receive positive feedback from my friends that the way I am expressing myself has changed significantly. I was surprised that even though the training was not as long or intense it has been able to influence my behaviour constructively.

I would wholeheartedly recommend everyone to familiarize themselves with the world of Non-violent communication in whichever way appeals to them. I would like to thank everyone once again for their effort. I hope our paths cross again someday 🙂
