Time is flying by—this Tuesday marks one week since the volunteers first set foot in Marrachenik, and the work can’t stop. We’re continuing the work we started yesterday: helping the village residents, pulling weeds, cutting wood for storage, and continuing to clean up the pieces of wood at the school. Every day, we’re contributing, step by step, to making this space a better place. The social media team posted their first photos and videos promoting the project—which, I’d like to remind you, you can find on our social media channels.
Today was Italian cuisine day in the kitchen, and the specialty of the day was risotto, made by Italians, of course. And after lunch, it was time to rest.
The sun warmed up the afternoon, and most of the volunteers settled in comfortably to recharge their energy. While some slept, others took advantage of the shade under the trees to chat and play games. With each passing day, we feel closer and more comfortable with one another and with this new space.
In the late afternoon, we visited one of our neighbors, Staiko and his family. His energy was contagious, especially considering that he is 82 years old and still has the drive and ability to build a house. We helped him carry heavy stones and ended the afternoon at his home, gathered around a table full of food and drinks they had provided. We chatted, learned a few words in Bulgarian, and showed off our dance moves. While some volunteers were at his house, others continued their Italian-themed evening in the kitchen, enjoying a frittata and eggplant alla parmigiana to cap off the day’s work. At the end of the day, we got together to dance and have fun, strengthening our bonds.
