Hello!
For six months, three young volunteers will live in a remote village working to rebuild a school and learn more about and connect with the rural life and people. The project, called Rural Future, is co-funded by the EU through the ESC programme.
🛠️ If you like what you see, you can apply here.
ℹ️ You can get to know the project better here.
During the Rural Future Project, we are going to cover the weekly progress through the so-called “Weekly Recaps”. Here we will give a short overview of what is going on in this little village called Mrachenik and will report on our experiences.
Our Mrachenik volunteer team is made up of three people: Leó, Mirthe, and Carlos. We all have different backgrounds and our ages span from 21-27 years.
As part of Smokinya Foundation, we work with the Plovdiv Smokinya team as well.
You will see mixing and exchange between the two teams during our stay in Bulgaria.
We are here one more week to update you about how it is going in Mrachenik!
We have to admit that last week was one of the busiest for the Mrachenik team, so it’s gonna be hard to wrap up all the activities they did in one single post.
First of all, we are delighted with this: the rose picking! You know Bulgaria (and especially Mrachenik’s region) is the land of the rose, and now in June is the season to collect them. So one of our beloved villagers requested for some rose-picker hands, and Smokinya is there to help!
It was difficult to choose only one picture about this activity because the roses field looks amazing! Waking up at 4 am is definitely worth it with these views:
Hey! Don’t miss the rose picking experience. You can live it by yourself with us by applying here.
But, apart from that, there was more work going on in the evenings. The focus from 5 pm every day was on the garden of one of the properties were Smokinya develops its activities. There, the team performed a big grass removal:
Later on, there was also time to get rid of a big bunch of branches. Check out the before vs after:
And, last but not least, our vegetables gardens were also on the spot this week. Now that it’s getting hotter, it required some routinary maintenance tasks, such as grass removal, watering or digging.
We worked not only on our main garden in Smokinya’s House, but also a new potato field that we recently launched:
And, of course, there is always time for our weekly Bulgarian lesson:
Stay tuned for next week!
