Hey everyone! My name is Mirthe, a 22-year-old from the Netherlands.
For the coming months, I will be living in Mrachenik and joining the long-term Smokinya volunteering programme!
In my day-to-day life I work as a woodworker, but recently I have decided to turn things around and move to a small village in remote Bulgaria for 6 months.
Coming from a city, it is quite the change to be in Mrachenik, but so far, every second has been worth it! As a woodworker who loves learning, I’m especially excited about all the physical work and renovation tasks we’ll be doing!
After visiting Bulgaria a few times before and getting to experience life in a remote village, I loved it so much that I decided to settle in Bulgaria for a bit longer.
With the Smokinya ‘Rural Future’ project, I have found a wonderful place that I am sure will feel like home.
Meeting with the locals, getting to experience the rich Bulgarian culture, the cuisine and overall good vibes, the past few weeks so far have been absolutely amazing and I can’t wait for what more is to come.
Sometimes it can be rough to get out of the comfort of ‘planned’ life. Here in Mrachenik we get to experience life to the fullest and even basic day-to-day chores take effort.
No electric heating system to stay warm, but chopping wood to light a fire. No malls for shopping, but cooking with our own vegetables directly from the garden. It makes us appreciate the smallest of things, which is one of the things I love the most!
I can’t wait to see what else Mrachenik, the Smokinya ‘Rural Future’ project and Bulgaria overall have in store for me and the team.
The next few months will be very exciting, educational and motivational I’m sure!
