August 22nd, 2019 – first of Documentary Screenings with Smokinya Foundation.
Movie: How to change the world.
Timing – terrifyingly perfect. Why? Let me explain.
In July 2019 social media quietly accepted the fact of wildfires in Siberia. There were some articles here and there but not even close to the amount of posts, videos and sorrows when Notre Dame fire happened. Soon after that wildfires occur in Amazonian rainforest. Social media stays quiet for a while again, but the moment comes and it explodes. People can’t stay silent anymore. They’re angry and scared, because our home is getting destroyed and the ones with power don’t seem to care.
But let’s get back to the movie screening for a while. In big lines How to change the world is a story about establishing Greenpeace organisation and environmental movement in general. In fact it is much more than that. It is a story about human nature, about our relationship with the world and ourselves. It is about our ability to move towards the goal and to know when to stop. It is about us.
Isn’t it ugly and beautiful how human beings are the ones who make actions to destroy and save our planet at the same time? We choose sides and fight against each other. And it resonates so much with the current situation with wildfires. Is it a natural phenomenon that happens every year? Yes. Summer is hot and dry, and a little spark can cause a disastrous fire. But how natural is this: fire is often used to clear out the land for farming or ranching in Amazon rainforest area? How natural is not caring about leaving creatures, whole ecosystems and other peoples’ lives?
But in the end of the day, we are here, reading this article from the comfort of our couch, from the coffee shop or on the bus, wandering what can we do. We are no superheroes, but there’s one superpower we do have – the power of voice.
So let’s use our voices together. Every second week starting with the first of Documentary Screenings with Smokinya which happened on August 22nd we are going to organize documentary movie nights with discussions. Everyone is welcome to suggest a topic or a specific movie for the screening. Everyone is welcome to come and express their thoughts and opinions. Join us and find likeminded people to continue making a change together with.
